Sardinia
The Baronie is one of the best-kept jewels in Sardinia, a territory set between the sea and the mountains that captivates with its contrasts. Thanks to its proximity to Olbia, this little piece of land is easily accessible by air or sea, but it is far removed from the glamour of the neighbouring Costa Smeralda.
Here, in the eastern part of the province of Nuoro, the barren peaks of Mount Albo watch over the surrounding wilderness, a paradise for trekking, mountain biking and climbing enthusiasts. Descending from the heights, the rocky terrain gives way to hills and green plains, criss-crossed by watercourses that flow into coves and lagoons before joining the Tyrrhenian Sea. On the coast, the scents of the Mediterranean scrub permeate the cliffs and sandy coves, making this stretch of coastline highly desirable in summer. But the Baronie are not just nature: these lands bear witness to a past that is still evident in the Nuragic ruins, the ancient pastoral huts, the castles and the mediaeval towers.
The Baronie have so much to offer, to best appreciate their authenticity it is advisable to visit them between May and September, taking care to avoid the high season if possible. Hiking shoes, a camera and a lot of enthusiasm are a must.
We start our journey from Posada, a charming mediaeval town and ancient capital of northern Baronie, and then venture on a trek to the peaks of Mount Albo and its breathtaking views. We continue the route by exploring the mysteries of the Nuragic civilisation at the Janna 'e Pruna archaeological site and the Irgoli Museum. After a visit to the village of Galtellì, we reach Orosei, the heart of southern Baronie. Finally, we bid farewell to this corner of authentic Sardinia amidst the green and blue of the Biderosa oasis, in what will be more of a farewell than a goodbye.
