While you’re in Rome, this immersive masterclass offers the perfect chance to discover the wines of its surrounding countryside—Lazio, a region often overlooked yet rich in character and complexity. Held at Maurizio’s wine club in the city, the two-hour session is guided by sommeliers Maurizio and Frank, whose work with small producers has helped bring Lazio’s native wines to light.

Over the course of two hours, you’ll taste native grapes and forgotten appellations: from the bright, fruit-forward whites of Castelli Romani to the mineral-driven wines of Lake Bolsena’s volcanic soils. And then, the bold finale—Cesanese, the pride of Ciociaria, a red unlike any other in Italy.

This is a deep dive into Lazio’s land, traditions, and quiet excellence—led by experts who’ve been championing these wines long before they caught anyone’s attention.

Maurizio and Frank bring Lazio’s wines to life with precision, passion and deep-rooted knowledge. They've spent years building trust with small-scale producers in the region, often gaining access to bottles not found in shops or wine bars—even within Italy.

Their masterclass is built on real stories and personal encounters. Each wine conveys a sense of place, reflecting their dedication to this often-overlooked region. They highlight origin, character and authenticity, selecting mostly low-intervention wines that lie well outside typical tasting circuits.

What makes this experience special is Maurizio and Frank themselves: sommeliers who have walked the vineyards, met the producers, and made these bottles part of their own journeys. As you taste, you’ll travel—figuratively—through volcanic hills, ancient lakes and wild valleys. The experience is structured but unpretentious, designed for people who want to learn something meaningful about Lazio through the glass in front of them.

Masterclass in Italy's wines in a private Monti tasting room led by expert Italian wine sommelier.

We meet in our private tasting room on a quiet side street in the ancient neighborhood of Monti. Guests sit at our communal tasting table and are asked to introduce themselves and their wine "habits" and personal tastes. From there the guide explains how the evening will progress, tasting six wines together (three whites and three reds) and covering topics such as grape varieties, appellations, winemaking traditions and the reasons why they are used, how to shop for wines and how to pair them with food, and much more. Each wine is poured, tasted in a guided way and finally discussed. Guests are encouraged to contribute what they taste and their personal opinions of the wines in order to determine what they like and dislike in a wine. Cured meats and cheeses are provided to pair with the wines.

At the end of the experience is the possibility to visit our private 3rd century wine cellar located below the tasting room!
